Teaching English to Young Learners
Basic principles in learning English at Y L levels (TEYL)
1- Teach English in English.
Even at beginners levels teachers don’t need to use the mother tongue. But this is sometimes possible when it becomes a final resort to convey Abstract meanings.
2- Choose suitable materials.
Suitable materials save both time and energy and help you to achieve a good lesson. They should be suitable to the instruction level and to students ‘age.
3- Active involvement.
The teacher must choose the right method and materials, focus attention and actively involving the learners. If students feel involved, they will learn better.
4- Positive reinforcement.
Teachers can encourage their students in a variety of different things. They can use: - smiles
- Eye contact
- Gestures (thump up)
- Words to approval: long yes, right, thank you, good, that’s perfect…
5- Communicative interaction.
Teacher should give enough chance for students to talk, act and ask questions. The more students talk the better lesson is.
6- Mistakes are natural.
Mistakes are a major part of the learning process. Teachers should not seek perfection while teaching. They are invited to give their students the chance and the time to correct each other and have self correction and consequently help students gain confidence and fluency.
7-Active listening.
Young learners can understand. They generally can understand more they can produce. So teachers should encourage their students to learn more by listening actively to him, to the class cassette and to their mates.
8- Changes of pace and activity.
A good lesson should contain:
- stirring activities that allow the learner to be active and productive.
- settling activities that involve calm and quietness allowing good listening or perfect silent reading.
9-Lessons should be enjoyable
All learners learn better if motivated. And there is no better motivation than doing something enjoyable. This applies just to students as to teachers.
